Milwaukee County Wisconsin custody guide

Search the Live Custody Record Before Anything Else

A Milwaukee County jail search should answer more than “is there a mugshot?” The useful questions are whether the person is currently in county custody, what bail or fine is displayed, which court branch is handling the case and which facility or agency you need next.

This guide walks through Milwaukee County Sheriff custody search, bail, court records, WI VINE, Wisconsin DOC, the Community Reintegration Center, Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility, mail, visitation, property, health services and public-record requests.

Fast answer

What Do You Need to Know Right Now?

Start with the task, not with a random records website.

Currently in jail? Use the Milwaukee County Sheriff In Custody Locator.
Bail or court date? Open the occupant record, then verify the related court case.
Moved elsewhere? Check CRC, Wisconsin DOC or WI VINE depending on custody level.
Need an old report? Use Sheriff Public Records or MPD Open Records based on the agency holding it.

Best order: current custody → verify identity → note bail/court information → identify the correct facility → follow the court case → use records or notification tools only when needed.

Official sheriff locator

How to Search Milwaukee County Jail Inmates

The Sheriff’s official locator provides four visible search fields. Start with the surname, then add other details only when needed.

1

Enter the last name

Use the legal surname. If no result appears, try removing punctuation, suffixes or optional filters before assuming the person is not in custody.

2

Add the first name

This helps narrow common surnames, but a slightly different first-name spelling can hide the expected match.

3

Use gender when useful

The locator includes a gender filter that can help reduce unrelated results.

4

Enter the four-digit birth year

The DOB field asks for the year in YYYY format rather than a complete date of birth.

5

Open the occupant details

Use the detail panel rather than relying on a name or image shown in the results.

Do not force a match: when name, age, physical description or case information conflicts with what you expected, treat it as an uncertain result and verify before sharing it.

What the Official Milwaukee In Custody Record Can Show

The official locator visibly exposes the following categories of information when data is available.

Locator field Useful for Important limitation
Image Another identity clue. A booking image does not establish guilt.
Race / Sex / Age Separating similar-name records. Do not rely on one field alone.
Height / Weight Identity confirmation. Measurements can change or be entered imperfectly.
Hair / Eye Additional physical-description checking. Not a unique identifier.
Bail / Fine Amount Seeing the amount currently displayed. Confirm current bail before payment.
Custody Date Checking whether the record fits the expected timeline. It is not necessarily identical to arrest time.
Court Date Identifying the next scheduled appearance when listed. Court dates can change.
Court Branch Info Routing the case to the correct court branch. The jail page is not the complete court docket.
Case Details Connecting custody to a court matter. Use the court system for later case movement and disposition.
Most important local distinction

CJF vs CRC vs Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility

Three Milwaukee-area correctional names are frequently mixed together online. They are not the same facility and they are not controlled by the same agency.

Milwaukee County Jail / CJF

Agency: Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office

Address:
949 N. 9th Street
Milwaukee, WI 53233

Best for: current downtown Milwaukee County jail custody, Jail Records and bail processing.

Community Reintegration Center

Agency: Milwaukee County

Address:
8885 S. 68th Street
Franklin, WI 53132

Former name: House of Correction

Best for: people housed at the separate county correctional facility in Franklin.

Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility

Agency: Wisconsin Department of Corrections

Address:
1015 N. 10th Street
Milwaukee, WI 53205

Phone:
414-212-3535

Best for: Wisconsin DOC custody, including many people connected with community supervision.

Search trap: MSDF is physically close to the downtown county jail but is a Wisconsin DOC state facility. Do not use County Jail mail, visitation or commissary instructions for MSDF.

Exact local bail workflow

How to Pay Milwaukee County Jail Bail

Do not rely on a third-party bail page or a screenshot of an old bail amount. Check the current occupant record first.

Bail Is Available In Person 24/7

Bail may be posted at the Criminal Justice Facility on G-Level at 949 N. 9th Street.

Bring Current Picture ID

The person posting bail needs valid current photo identification.

Payments Under $10,000 Use the G-Level Kiosk

Milwaukee County says bail payments below $10,000 are processed through the kiosk. Cash has no kiosk fee; card payments involve processing fees.

Cashier’s Checks and Money Orders Must Be Verified

When using a cashier’s check or money order, the Sheriff’s Office verifies the issuing institution during normal banking hours. An instrument that cannot be verified is not accepted.

Cashier’s checks and money orders used directly to post bail must be payable to Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

$10,000 or More Requires IRS Form 8300

Milwaukee County states that federal Form 8300 must be completed for bail payments of $10,000 or more. Valid identification and a Social Security number are required for that reporting process.

Online Bail Is Not Available

The Sheriff’s Office says bail itself cannot be paid online because the surety must sign the bail forms.

Commissary Can Be Used for Self-Bail

Money can be placed in the occupant’s commissary account for the occupant to self-bail. When that happens, the occupant becomes the surety.

Refund ownership matters: when a person self-bails from their commissary account, any refundable bail belongs to the occupant as surety—not necessarily the outside person who deposited the money.

Mailing Money for Self-Bail

Milwaukee County also allows funds for self-bail to be mailed to the Criminal Justice Facility. The money order should be payable to the person in custody rather than to the Sheriff’s Office when it is being deposited into the occupant’s account.

After the case closes

When Milwaukee County Bail Is Refunded

Bail is not returned simply because a person was released from jail. Refund depends on what happens in the case.

Typical Refund Timing

Milwaukee County says a refundable check is generally mailed after the case closes. Criminal Court also advises allowing about three weeks after disposition before contacting the office.

Bail Over $1,000 Can Require an Affidavit

For an eligible criminal bail amount over $1,000, the person who posted the bail receives a refund notice and affidavit. After a timely accepted affidavit and case update, the refund is generally mailed in about three to four weeks.

Refund Can Be Reduced by a Fine or Judgment

If the defendant is found guilty and the court enters a fine or judgment, available bail may be applied toward that amount before any remaining balance is returned.

Failure to Appear Can Forfeit Bail

If the defendant fails to appear, the judge may order the bail forfeited and may issue a bench warrant.

An Open Case Normally Means No Final Refund Yet

When the case remains open with a future court date, the bail generally remains in place unless the court orders otherwise.

Use the Court Record for the Legal Outcome

The jail locator can help you find the court date and branch, but it should not be treated as the complete criminal case file.

Wisconsin Circuit Court Search

Use Wisconsin Circuit Court Access for public circuit-court case information such as parties, dates, filings and orders.

Milwaukee County felony and misdemeanor cases generally move through the circuit-court system rather than Municipal Court.

Milwaukee Municipal Court

Use this for City of Milwaukee municipal cases and citations.

The search accepts:

  • Citation number
  • Defendant name
  • Business name

WCCA Does Not Give You the Actual Court Documents Online

Wisconsin Court System explains that WCCA displays public case information but does not display or sell the actual documents and transcripts from cases. To inspect those materials, contact or visit the courthouse where the case was filed.

Municipal Search Has a Five-Year Display Window

The Milwaukee Municipal Court website says it displays cases that remain unsatisfied or that were satisfied within the previous five years.

A Municipal Ordinance Case Is Not Automatically a Misdemeanor or Felony

Milwaukee Municipal Court explicitly explains that a municipal ordinance violation is neither a misdemeanor nor a felony.

Different case types, different instructions

Milwaukee Criminal Warrant Starting Points

The Milwaukee County Criminal Court publishes different instructions depending on the case type.

Felony Warrant

The current Criminal Court guidance directs a person with a felony warrant to the Sheriff’s Department on G-1 of the Criminal Justice Facility at 949 N. 9th Street.

Misdemeanor Case

The current county guidance directs people with a misdemeanor matter to the customer-service window outside Room 117 of the Safety Building at 821 W. State Street to check status.

Legal consequence warning: a warrant can affect immediate custody. Verify the current court instructions and obtain legal advice when necessary rather than relying on an old article or search-result snippet.

Stop refreshing the roster

Use WI VINE for County Jail Custody Notifications

When the real question is “tell me when custody changes,” WI VINE is more useful than repeatedly checking an image or roster.

Free and Anonymous

WI VINE County Jails is operated through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Office of Victim Services and Programs in partnership with local agencies.

You can use the service to check county-jail status without signing up for notifications.

Phone and Email Notifications

Users can register for automated notifications when an inmate’s custody status changes.

Current Weekend Visit Framework

The CRC currently publishes Saturday and Sunday visitation from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with 30-minute visits and a maximum of two adults and two children, subject to current operational restrictions.

Do not reuse downtown jail instructions: CRC visitation, mail, accounts, property and records have separate procedures and contacts.

Downtown jail visitation

Milwaukee County Jail Video Visits

The downtown Milwaukee County Jail currently offers offsite video visitation.

The Sheriff links to the active visitation provider from its Detention Services page.

Visits Are Monitored and Recorded

Milwaukee County warns visitors that visits are monitored and recorded.

Personal Recording Is Prohibited

The Sheriff’s published policy says personally recording a visit can result in permanent loss of visiting privileges.

Check custody first: before paying for or scheduling a visit, recheck the In Custody Locator so you do not use outdated facility information.

Allow Up to 24 Hours

The county cautions that deposits may take up to 24 hours to appear in the occupant’s account.

Identity check: confirm the person and current custody before sending money. A recent release or transfer can change the correct funding process.

Mail rules in plain English

How to Send Mail to Milwaukee County Jail

The mailing instructions are more detailed than simply writing the person’s name on an envelope.

Required Mailing Format

Full Name of Occupant
Booking Number
Housing Unit and Cell Number
949 N. 9th Street
Milwaukee, WI 53233

Complete Sender Address Is Required

Mail must contain the sender’s full name and full return address, including apartment number when applicable.

Letters and Small Non-Polaroid Photos

Occupants may receive letters and non-Polaroid photographs measuring 4 × 6 inches or smaller, subject to jail inspection and content rules.

Greeting Cards Are Not Permitted

If a greeting card arrives, the county says the occupant receives a copy while the original card is secured with the occupant’s property.

Books and Periodicals Must Come From a Commercial Source

Books, newspapers and magazines must be mailed directly from a verified publisher, distributor or other bona fide commercial source.

Books Must Be Soft Cover

The Sheriff’s current policy does not accept hard-cover books.

Mail for Someone No Longer in Custody Is Returned

This is another reason to verify live custody immediately before sending mail.

Rejected Publisher Mail Has an Appeal Process

When publisher/distributor material is rejected under the policy, the sender and occupant are notified. The publisher or commercial sender has 14 days to appeal in writing, and the Jail Commander or designee provides a written response within 10 business days of receiving the appeal.

Often-missed family task

Property Pickup and Clothing Drop-Off Rules

Occupant Property Release Needs 24-Hour Advance Request

The occupant must complete a Property Release form identifying the person authorized to collect the property and request it at least 24 hours before release.

Recipient Must Be at Least 18 and Show Photo ID

The named recipient must bring valid identification such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport.

Only Listed Items Are Released

Property staff release only the property specifically authorized by the occupant.

Jury Trial Clothing Can Be Dropped Off

Clothing for a jury trial can be delivered no sooner than 48 hours before the trial date at the visiting desk at 949 N. 9th Street.

Suitcoats Hangers
Sweaters Shoes
Shirts Belts
Pants Ties and socks

Weather-Appropriate Release Clothing

Family or friends may also drop off suitable clothing such as a coat or boots when the occupant needs weather-appropriate clothing upon release.

Money is separate: the property room does not handle currency. Use the Jail Cashier at 414-226-7172 for money-related questions.

Telephone contact

You Cannot Call Through to a Milwaukee County Jail Occupant

The Sheriff’s policy permits occupants to make outgoing calls only.

No Incoming Personal Calls

Friends and family cannot call the jail and ask to be transferred to an occupant.

Prepaid Calling

Money on the occupant’s account can be used for prepaid calling privileges.

Other Calls Are Collect

For collect calls, follow the automated prompts to accept the call, hear pricing or refuse the call.

Do not assume a missed call means a custody change. Telephone access can be affected by account balance, unit schedules, restrictions and facility operations.

Beyond basic confinement

High School Education

Instruction is provided through Milwaukee Public Schools. Qualifying 14- to 17-year-old occupants can earn high-school credits or a diploma.

General Education

Volunteer-supported services can include tutoring, teaching, academic testing and parenting classes.

Health & Recovery

Was the Arrest Made by Milwaukee Police?

Being booked into Milwaukee County Jail does not mean the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office created every record connected with the arrest.

Milwaukee Police Reports Come From MPD

If you need the Milwaukee Police Department incident or investigative report, request it from MPD Open Records rather than asking Sheriff Public Records to create or supply an MPD record.

Current MPD Copy Charges

MPD currently lists $0.25 per page or CD and $0.50 per color photograph for applicable police-report requests. Its counter accepts cash or check.

Complex Records Can Take Longer

MPD explains that large requests and records requiring time-intensive review, including some violent-crime, video or audio records, are processed through the general backlog rather than immediately at the counter.

Simple rule: Sheriff jail record → MCSO. Milwaukee Police arrest/investigative report → MPD. Court case → Wisconsin courts. State correctional record → Wisconsin DOC.

Why Someone May Not Appear in the Milwaukee County Jail Search

Do not jump straight to a paid records site. Work through the custody timeline first.

Very recent arrest The person may still be moving through arrest and intake processing. Recheck the locator or call Jail Records when current custody must be confirmed.
Name mismatch Remove optional filters and retry the legal surname before assuming there is no record.
Wrong birth year The locator uses a four-digit birth year. An incorrect year can hide the result.
Released A live custody locator is not the same as a permanent arrest archive. Move to court and public-record sources when researching an older event.
CRC resident The person may be at the Community Reintegration Center in Franklin rather than the downtown jail.
MSDF / Wisconsin DOC The person may be under state correctional custody at Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility or another Wisconsin DOC institution.
Different county The arrest may have occurred elsewhere in Wisconsin even if the person lives in Milwaukee.
Municipal case only A municipal citation or case does not automatically mean the defendant is currently incarcerated in the county jail.
Historical booking Use Sheriff Public Records, MPD records and court records when researching an older arrest rather than expecting the current locator to function as a complete history database.

Common questions

How do I search for someone in the Milwaukee County Jail?

Use the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s official In Custody Locator. Search by last name and optionally add first name, gender and four-digit birth year, then open the matching occupant record.

What does the Milwaukee County In Custody Locator show?

The locator can display an image, race, sex and age, height, weight, hair and eye information, bail or fine amount, custody date, court date, court branch information and case details.

Can Milwaukee County Jail bail be paid online?

How long does a Milwaukee County bail refund take?

A normal refundable bail check is generally mailed after the case closes. Milwaukee County states that eligible criminal bail refunds over $1,000 involve a refund notice and affidavit and are generally issued three to four weeks after the case update when requirements are satisfied.

What is the difference between Milwaukee County Jail, the CRC and MSDF?

Milwaukee County Jail at the Criminal Justice Facility is operated by the Sheriff’s Office. The Community Reintegration Center is a separate Milwaukee County correctional facility in Franklin. Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility is a Wisconsin Department of Corrections state facility in downtown Milwaukee.

Where do I get a Milwaukee Police arrest or incident report?

Milwaukee Police Department records are requested from the MPD Open Records Section, not from the Sheriff’s Office simply because the person later entered the county jail.

Does the Milwaukee County jail roster prove someone was convicted?

No. The Sheriff’s In Custody Locator specifically warns that being booked into the county jail does not establish that a person is guilty of or has been convicted of a crime.
