Search Arrest, Mugshot & Inmate Records by Name
Search by name and state for arrest, booking, mugshot, inmate, jail roster, prison, criminal and court-record search categories.
Independent records-search resource. This website is not a government agency, police department, sheriff's office, jail, prison or courthouse. Search coverage varies by source and jurisdiction. Some links may lead to third-party services, and compensation may be received when a partner service is used.
Use the Jail Search First—Then Follow the Case
DeKalb County, Georgia does not use the simple static inmate-roster format that searchers often expect. The Sheriff’s Office sends detailed inmate searches to the county Judicial Information System, where jail records, court cases and hearing searches are separate tools.
This guide explains exactly which tool to use, how to avoid the common DeKalb Alabama mix-up, when first appearance happens, how bond and visitation work, where inmate mail goes, how to obtain court dispositions and what to do when a person does not appear in the expected search.
Which DeKalb Search Should You Use?
Most reliable workflow: Jail Search → save booking identifiers → Smart Search → Search Hearings → first appearance/bond → final court disposition.
DeKalb Jail & Court Quick Navigation
How to Search DeKalb County Jail Inmates
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office currently points users to the county Judicial Information System for detailed inmate information. Inside that system, Jail Search is the correct tool when your main question concerns jail custody or a jail record.
Open the official DeKalb Judicial portal
Do not begin with a private “real-time roster” page. Use the portal linked by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
Select Jail Search
The portal explicitly separates Jail Search from Smart Search and Search Hearings. Use Jail Search for the jail record itself.
Search the legal name
Use the full legal name when known. If you are uncertain about spelling, search carefully and compare the result with other public identifiers rather than assuming the first match is correct.
Save the booking identifier
A booking number, SO number or case number is far more useful for follow-up than a screenshot of a name or mugshot.
Move to Smart Search
Once the jail identity is confirmed, use the booking number, name or other available identifiers to find connected court information.
Check the hearing separately
Use Search Hearings or the appropriate court calendar for scheduled court events rather than assuming a jail record contains the current hearing information.
Portal technical requirement: the Judicial Information System requires JavaScript and cookies. If it opens to a browser-support warning or blank-looking page, enable JavaScript/cookies and use a current browser.
DeKalb County Georgia Does Not Use the Alabama-Style Roster
A broad search for “DeKalb County jail roster” frequently surfaces DeKalb County, Alabama. That is a completely different jail and sheriff’s office.
| Clue | DeKalb County, Georgia | Wrong-state result |
|---|---|---|
| County seat / area | Decatur / Atlanta metro | Fort Payne, Alabama |
| Jail search | Tyler Judicial Information System | Separate Alabama inmate-roster website |
| Typical phone area code | 404 / Atlanta metro | 256 / northeast Alabama |
| Jail address | Memorial Drive, Decatur | Fort Payne-area detention facility |
Stop immediately if the result says Fort Payne, Alabama or uses a 256 jail phone number. This article is only for DeKalb County, Georgia.
For another Atlanta-area county where the sheriff uses a different inmate-search system, see our Fulton County Jail booking and inmate guide.
Use DeKalb Smart Search to Reduce Wrong-Person Results
Smart Search is the broader court-record tool in the Judicial Information System. It supports basic names and record numbers plus several advanced filters that can make a same-name search much more accurate.
Correct Name Format
The current Smart Search page instructs users to search names in Last, First Middle Suffix format. It also supports wildcard searches when only part of a name or case number is known.
Do not publish from a name-only match. Compare booking number, date of birth, filing period, case details and court information whenever available.
Why You May See the Case but Not the Court Document
The DeKalb Judicial Information System lets users reach basic case and event information without necessarily having document-image access.
The portal’s current notice says non-agency users who want to view and print document images from Smart Search should register, open their profile, choose Request Access and request the Public Access with Documents role.
Useful distinction: not seeing a PDF/image does not necessarily mean the case is missing. First confirm that the case/events are visible, then check whether document-access registration is required.

When Is DeKalb County First Appearance?
DeKalb Magistrate Court publishes separate first-appearance schedules for misdemeanor and felony matters.
| Type | Current published schedule | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Misdemeanor first appearance | 9:30 a.m. every day | Charges, rights, counsel, bond/release conditions and future hearing rights are addressed |
| Felony first appearance | 1:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday | Charges and rights are explained and bond is addressed when legally permitted |
Where First Appearance Is Handled
The court says first-appearance hearings are open to the public and may be in person and/or viewable at the Magistrate Court Criminal Division. Virtual links are reserved for court participants such as attorneys, clerks, victims and witnesses.
First appearance is not a trial or preliminary hearing. The Magistrate Court says the judge does not decide dismissal of the charges at first appearance and does not question the defendant about the facts of the case.
Useful DeKalb Criminal-Case Contacts
Public Defender
The Magistrate Court says Public Defender attorneys are generally present for first-appearance hearings.
District Attorney
Relevant for felony prosecution and unindicted “D number” matters.
Solicitor-General
Relevant for qualifying misdemeanor prosecutions.
Sheriff Bonding Office
Use after verifying the bond and controlling case.
What DeKalb Pretrial Services Does
DeKalb County Pretrial Services works with felony and misdemeanor defendants who are released on bond or ordered into pretrial supervision.
The agency states that it reviews a daily list of inmates arrested the previous day. When someone pre-qualifies based on the charge and criminal history, a Pretrial investigator may interview the jailed defendant and provide background information to the court.
Pretrial review is not a guarantee of release. A judge controls the applicable bond or release decision.
How to Check a Possible DeKalb County Arrest Warrant
A person can have a warrant without appearing as a current jail inmate. Therefore, a “no result” in Jail Search should never be interpreted as proof that no warrant exists.
DeKalb Magistrate Court’s criminal FAQ specifically says its Clerk’s Office will not tell a caller whether there is an outstanding arrest warrant.
Sheriff Warrant Status Route
If you believe there may be an outstanding warrant, the Magistrate Court directs you to contact the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office:
What Magistrate Court Handles
DeKalb Magistrate Court’s Criminal Division handles arrest warrants, search warrants and first appearance/bond hearings.
Safety: do not confront another person based on a suspected warrant. For immediate danger, call 911. For your own warrant or case, consider speaking with an attorney and use the official court/Sheriff route.
How to Search DeKalb Court Cases and Hearings
A jail record answers a custody question. DeKalb’s court tools answer different questions: what case was filed, which court is handling it and when a hearing is scheduled.
| Need | Use | Best identifier |
|---|---|---|
| Jail custody | Jail Search | Legal name / jail identifiers |
| Criminal case | Smart Search | Case number or booking number |
| Upcoming hearing | Search Hearings | Case number or party name |
| Final felony disposition | Superior Court Clerk Criminal Department | Case number + defendant |
Superior, State or Magistrate Court?
| Court | County-described criminal role | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Superior Court | Felony criminal cases with jury trials | Filed felony prosecutions and final felony disposition |
| State Court | Misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations and DUI | Many misdemeanor and traffic-related criminal cases |
| Magistrate Court | Criminal arrest warrants plus first appearance/bond functions | Early criminal procedure, warrants and initial bond issues |
Do not assume the booking charge tells you the final court. Case routing can depend on charge level, prosecution decisions and subsequent filings.
What a DeKalb “D Number” Means
DeKalb Superior Court explains that a felony matter is not assigned to a specific Superior Court judge until the District Attorney decides to bring charges and an indictment or accusation is filed with the Clerk.
Before that filing, the matter is considered unindicted and may be identified by a “D” number.
No assigned judge is not necessarily a missing case. If you have a D number, Superior Court directs questions about the unindicted matter to the DeKalb District Attorney’s Office.
How to Get DeKalb Superior Court Criminal Records
If the question is no longer “is this person in jail?” but instead “what was the final felony outcome?”, use the DeKalb Clerk of Superior Court Criminal Department.

For Sheriff’s Office property-bond forms, the page separately lists a $20 property-bond-form fee and a $7.50 property-affidavit fee.
Never calculate bond from a third-party page. Confirm the exact amount and every hold with the live jail/court source before paying.
How DeKalb Cash & Property Bond Refunds Work
Cash Bond
The Sheriff says a cash bond can be returned after the case is settled. The refund is made to the surety—the person who actually posted the bond and/or whose name appears on the receipt.

The Sheriff’s current page says property bonds below $10,000 do not result in a lien, while a property bond of $10,000 or more does result in a lien being placed on the property.
After the case is settled, additional Notice of Bond and Release of Property Bond paperwork is required to complete the lien-release process.
DeKalb Jail Uses ViaPath Remote Video Visitation

| Cost | $0.19 per minute |

- Wait for account approval
- Schedule at least 24 hours ahead
- Use an internet-enabled device
- Dress and behave appropriately
- Assume ordinary visits are recorded and monitored
- Recheck custody before paying for a visit
Restriction: the Sheriff’s current page says maximum-security or mental-health inmates cannot use ordinary visitation and that special accommodations may be arranged at intake.
Attorney Online Visitation Uses the Same ViaPath System
The Sheriff currently requires attorneys to register online through the ViaPath visitation system. Attorney visits are approved by jail staff before they begin.
The Sheriff’s visitation page also states that ordinary visits are recorded and electronically monitored except attorneys and clergy.
How DeKalb Inmate Phone Calls Work
The Sheriff’s current page says each housing unit has a coinless telephone available to inmates.
Messaging & Electronic Mail
The Sheriff’s alerts say new procedures for telephone calls, video visits, messaging and electronic mail took effect in January 2026. The Sheriff’s inmate-support pages now link users to ViaPath/GettingOut services.
Do not rely on old Securus or pre-2026 instructions. Use the current Sheriff/ViaPath link because communication providers and account procedures changed in January 2026.

How to Put Money on a DeKalb Inmate Account
Each inmate receives a personal account at intake. Available funds can be used for additional food, personal items and other commissary services.

Medical, Mental Health & Special-Diet Services

Privacy: a public jail search is not a medical-record source. Specific inmate medical information may be protected from disclosure.
Who Has the Police Report for a DeKalb Arrest?
The jail holds inmates arrested by multiple law-enforcement agencies. The agency that made or documented the arrest is generally the better place to request its police incident report.
| Situation | Best records route |
|---|---|
| DeKalb County Police made the report | DeKalb County Police Records |
| Sheriff jail or Sheriff’s Office record | DeKalb Sheriff’s Open Records process |
| Brookhaven, Chamblee, Clarkston or another city police department | That city’s police records office |
| Court filing/disposition | Appropriate DeKalb court or Clerk |

Tucker, GA 30084
Published hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Lunch closure: 1:00-2:00 p.m.
DeKalb County Police currently says Police and Fire/EMS reports are generally available after 3–5 business days.
Do not ask the Sheriff’s jail for every police report. The Magistrate Court’s own FAQ says to obtain a police report from the records department of the police agency that took the report.
How to Request a DeKalb Sheriff’s Record
The DeKalb Sheriff’s Office provides an online Open Records Act request process for available documents and booking-photo requests.
Prepare a Narrow Request
- Full legal name
- Date of birth when appropriate and known
- Approximate arrest or booking date
- Current booking number if available
- Exact record needed
- Incident or case number when known
- Correct arresting agency
- Preferred delivery method
“I am requesting the publicly releasable [jail record / booking record / booking photograph] concerning [full legal name], associated with a booking on or about [date]. The booking or case number, if known, is [number]. Please advise whether your office maintains the requested record and what fees, restrictions or delivery options apply.”
Georgia Open-Records Timing
DeKalb County’s current Open Records guidance says a requester should receive a response within three business days. That response may provide records, explain that more time is needed, state applicable costs/restrictions or say the requested record does not exist; it is not a guarantee that every large request will be fully produced within three days.
How DeKalb Handles Booking Photo Requests
A jail inmate search and a booking-photo request are not the same service.
The Sheriff’s Public Information page states that booking photos provided to news organizations require a signed Booking Photo Use Agreement under Georgia law. News organizations are instructed to provide the inmate’s name and current booking number from Inmate Lookup.
The Sheriff’s Open Records portal also provides a route for booking-photo requests, but availability and disclosure requirements depend on the request and applicable Georgia law.
No displayed mugshot does not mean no booking. Verify the jail and court record instead of using photo availability as proof of whether an arrest occurred.
Use VINE for Custody Notifications
The DeKalb Sheriff’s Public Services page links users to VINE when they need qualifying notification of an inmate’s release or custody change.
VINE should be treated as a notification tool, not as a replacement for the Judicial Information System or the court docket.
When to Switch to Georgia DOC Find an Offender
| Situation | Correct starting point |
|---|---|
| Fresh DeKalb arrest | DeKalb Jail Search |
| Current county-jail custody | DeKalb Jail Search |
| Court case or hearing | Smart Search / Search Hearings |
| Georgia state-prison custody | GDC Find an Offender |
Georgia Department of Corrections says Find an Offender is for people currently housed in a GDC facility and can search by name, description, ID or case number.
No GDC match does not rule out DeKalb custody. GDC state-prison search and DeKalb County Jail are separate systems.
For another Georgia jurisdiction that uses a different local booking workflow, see our Augusta/Richmond County arrest and jail guide.
Why a DeKalb County Inmate or Case May Not Show Up
How to Report Sexual Abuse or Harassment in DeKalb Jail
The Sheriff’s PREA information states that the agency maintains a zero-tolerance policy and provides third-party reporting channels for concerns involving an inmate or detainee.
PREA Hotline
Office of Professional Standards
4415 Memorial Drive
Decatur, GA 30032
Immediate danger: call 911 when emergency law-enforcement response is required. A routine website form or public-record request should not be used as an emergency reporting channel.
What a DeKalb Jail Record Does Not Prove
- It does not prove guilt
- It does not prove conviction
- It does not guarantee current custody forever
- It does not prove the booking charge became the final charge
- It does not guarantee the bond is still unchanged
- It does not replace a court disposition
- It does not prove a same-name person is the correct person
- It does not rule out a warrant when no inmate result appears
- It is not a complete statewide criminal history
- It is not a consumer background report
FCRA limitation: Jail-Mugshots.org is an independent informational guide and is not a Consumer Reporting Agency. Do not use this page for employment, tenant screening, credit, insurance or another regulated eligibility decision.
