Spartanburg County Jail Search: Find the Booking, Then Complete the Next Step

The official Spartanburg County jail inmate search is more useful when you treat it as the beginning of a record trail rather than a mugshot gallery. Spartanburg County Sheriff’s detention resources can help identify a recent booking, bail information and current jail-related information.

This guide then shows the exact next route for bond court, the criminal court case, inmate money, video visits, scanned mail, phone calls, medical questions, property, Sheriff’s reports, the Public Defender, home detention, SC VINE, state prison custody and even post-case expungement research.

Do this first

Open the Sheriff’s recent booking search—not a national name-search form

Spartanburg’s official booking page is intended for recent county bookings. The page states that it displays people booked within the previous 72 hours.

After the booking page opens scan the recent entries → find the legal name → open/review the matching booking → compare the photograph with booking date/time and identifiers → note arresting agency, charges and bail → if the person is not in the 72-hour list, switch to Detention Services, court records or the “not found” workflow below.
Recent booking window Last 72 hours on Sheriff booking page
Detention address 950 California Ave, Spartanburg, SC 29303

Pick the Right Spartanburg Record Before You Search Again

A booking search, jail population page and court docket are not duplicates. Each answers a different question.

“Was the person recently booked?”

Use the Sheriff’s 72-hour booking search and compare booking details.

Open recent bookings
“What happened with the charge?”

Stop relying on the mugshot and move to the Spartanburg County Public Index.

Open court case search
“Did the person move to state prison?”

Use SCDC only when state correctional custody—not county detention—is relevant.

Open SCDC search

What Each Spartanburg Booking Detail Is Actually Good For

Booking photo Helps visually compare a potential booking match. Not a conviction and not a complete identity check.
Full name Use the exact booked spelling for later court and VINE searches. Name-only matches are weak.
Name / booking number Can help jail staff or online systems distinguish the person. It is not automatically the court case number.
Booking date Confirms whether the arrest matches the timeframe you expected. Booking time can occur after the original arrest time.
Arresting agency Tells you which agency may possess the underlying police report. The detention center does not own every police report.
Charge Shows the allegation carried into booking. Use the court docket for later filed charges and disposition.
Bail Gives a starting point for the bond question. One amount does not guarantee immediate release.
Release information Can explain why the person no longer appears in physical custody. Release does not end the criminal case.
Court identifier Use any available court number to find the Public Index result faster. Save it before the jail page is no longer useful.
Strongest match: source + exact name + booking date + booking number + arresting agency + charge context + court follow-up.

No Spartanburg Jail Result? Use This Troubleshooting Order

Recent booking still processing

Intake includes identity questions, property inventory, medical screening, fingerprints and photographs. Recheck after processing has had time to finish.

Outside 72 hours

The Sheriff’s recent booking page is a short-window tool. Use Detention Services or court records for an older arrest.

Courtesy Summons

A qualifying incident may have resulted in a summons rather than physical jail intake, which can mean no booking photograph.

Already released

A person can leave the detention center while the criminal court case remains active.

Wrong spelling

Retry the legal surname and compare middle names, initials, suffixes or alternate spellings.

Different jurisdiction

Confirm the actual booking county and arresting agency rather than assuming every Spartanburg-area arrest is held at this detention center.

Home detention

Some qualifying defendants or sentenced non-violent offenders can move into the county’s court-approved electronic-monitoring program.

SCDC state custody

If the person has been sentenced into South Carolina state-prison custody, use the Department of Corrections search instead.

If timing matters right now call the Detention Services Division at 864-596-2607 rather than treating a cached screenshot or third-party mugshot page as current custody proof.

What Happens During Spartanburg County Jail Intake?

The Sheriff’s Intake Information page explains why a new arrest involves several steps before the public record becomes useful.

Personal information

Booking questions

Staff collect information such as address, employer and other identifying details.

Property

Inventory + receipt

Personal property is inventoried, and the intake information says a property receipt is provided.

Money

Placed in inmate account

Money on the person’s possession is inventoried and put into the inmate’s account.

Medical

Health questions

Intake includes questions about medical conditions and needed medications.

Identification

Photo + fingerprints

The Sheriff states that people are photographed and fingerprinted when arrested and processed.

Telephone

Initial local call

Intake policy provides an opportunity for one free local call to family, friends or an attorney after admission.

After opening the Intake Information page read “Booking Procedures” → check “Medications” if health issues are involved → read “Initial Appearance / Bail Proceedings” if the arrest is fresh → then move to the separate Bail Proceedings page for the current local bond process.

Spartanburg County Bond: Hearing Times, Bond Types and What Families Should Prepare

Spartanburg publishes unusually detailed local bond information. The Sheriff’s Bail Proceedings page says bond proceedings are generally handled by Magistrate or Municipal Courts.

Published bond time 11:00 a.m.
Published bond time 6:00 p.m.
Published bond time 9:00 p.m.
Published bond time Midnight + thereafter as needed
These are the Sheriff’s published usual hearing times, not a guarantee that a particular person’s case will be heard at an exact clock time. Confirm the current situation when travel or attendance depends on it.

What the judge is doing at the bond proceeding

The Sheriff’s page explains that the defendant is generally advised of the charges and legal rights, then the judge determines bond. A plea is not required at this proceeding.

Personal recognizance Release without a surety can be available in qualifying non-capital cases unless the court finds appearance or community-safety concerns.
Cash A surety bond may be satisfied by depositing the required cash with the court when permitted.
Percentage The Sheriff’s page says the court can allow up to 10% of the bond in cash when the judge approves that method.
Surety A professional or qualifying accommodation surety may sign under the applicable process.

Commercial bondsman vs accommodation bondsman

Commercial surety

Published fee: up to 15%

Spartanburg Sheriff’s bail page says a licensed professional bondsman may charge a fee of up to 15% of the bond.

The Sheriff notes that this fee is non-refundable even if the defendant is ultimately found not guilty.
Accommodation surety

Property-backed option

A qualifying South Carolina resident can potentially act as an accommodation bondsman without receiving compensation beyond the permitted surety relationship.

For Spartanburg real estate, the Bond Court can review county assessor records.

If you want to use real estate as an accommodation surety

  • Bring picture identification.
  • Bring the address of the real estate.
  • Know balances of liens and judgments.
  • Bring a list of other bail bonds on which you are already obligated.
  • If the property is in another South Carolina county, bring documents proving value and ownership.
After opening Bail Proceedings read the bond explanation → identify recognizance vs surety → review the eight factors the judge considers → check the published hearing times → if using property as surety, read the accommodation-bondsman instructions before going to Bond Court.

Spartanburg Jail Video Visitation: Full Practical Checklist

Spartanburg generally uses video visitation for family and friends. The current Sheriff policy describes two 30-minute visitation slots per week and one paid remote visit of 20 or 40 minutes, as available, unless privileges are restricted.

General allowance Two 30-minute slots weekly
Remote option One paid 20- or 40-minute visit
Visitor ID Picture identification required
Check-in location Main Jail lobby kiosk

Before scheduling

Confirm the person is still housed in Spartanburg detention.
Open the current Visitation Policy. Open the official policy .
Use the current registration/scheduling method shown by the Sheriff. Do not rely on a scheduler bookmarked months earlier.
Confirm you are an approved registered visitor.
Bring picture identification.
Arrive early enough to complete electronic lobby check-in. The official page currently contains contradictory written/numeric arrival wording, so confirm the current requirement rather than guessing.

Children visiting an inmate

  • Children are limited to immediate-family relationships described in the policy.
  • The policy lists sons, daughters, grandchildren, brothers and sisters.
  • Nieces and nephews are not included in that published definition.
  • Only two children may visit at one time without prior approval.
  • Children count toward the approved visitors in the visiting slot.
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany and supervise children.

Common reasons a visit can be denied or ended

ID / approval problem

No ID or not being on the approved visitor list can stop the visit.

Late arrival

The Sheriff says late arrival can cause a visit to be missed and counted.

Dress rules

Inappropriate or revealing clothing and improper footwear can prevent entry.

Intoxication / behavior

Being under the influence or disruptive can result in refusal or termination.

Search refusal

Visitors are subject to security screening; refusal can affect visitation privileges.

Inmate unavailable

Court, medical appointments or facility concerns can make the inmate unavailable.

Attorney and professional visits

The Sheriff’s policy states that approved professional visitors and attorneys are generally permitted between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Monday–Friday. State/local defense attorneys need appropriate identification and South Carolina Bar credentials. Federal-inmate attorney visits require the additional approval described by the Sheriff.

If the inmate is hospitalized

General hospital visits are not normally allowed. If the inmate’s medical condition is critical, the Sheriff’s policy allows the possibility of a limited immediate-family visit coordinated by the jail Director’s Office and hospital staff.

If approved, the published policy limits these visits to about 15 minutes and does not allow family members to bring food, money or other items.
Current official-page conflict: the Visitation Policy includes references to SmartInmate, SECURUS and a legacy Lattice scheduler, and it contains the contradictory phrase “thirty (15) minutes” for early arrival. Start from the Sheriff’s live visitation page every time and confirm current registration/check-in instructions before traveling or paying.

Sending Money: Spartanburg Kiosk, Online Deposit and Postal Money Order

Main Jail kiosk

Open 24/7

The lobby kiosk at 950 California Avenue accepts cash, credit cards and debit cards.

The Sheriff currently publishes a $3 deduction from a cash deposit.

The facility states that it accepts U.S. Postal Money Orders through the mail and does not accept mailed cash.

Postal Money Order details people often miss

  • Write the inmate’s name and inmate number on the money order.
  • The Sheriff currently publishes a $3 transaction deduction.
  • Money orders are processed Monday–Friday excluding holidays.
  • The Sheriff says the inmate receives a receipt the day after processing.
  • Do not place ordinary letters or photographs inside a money-order envelope.

Spartanburg Jail Phone Calls: What Happens After the First Free Call

Spartanburg’s current Telephone Services page identifies SmartInmate as its contractual phone provider and states that jail telephone calls are recorded and subject to monitoring.

At intake

One free local call

A newly admitted person is generally allowed a local call to notify family, friends or an attorney.

After that

Collect calls

The published policy says subsequent calls are generally collect unless inmate-purchased phone time is used.

Alternative

Phone time

An inmate can buy phone time through the canteen system and use an assigned PIN.

If a person remains detained and follows jail rules, the Sheriff’s policy describes telephone access up to two times daily, while stating access will be no less than once per week. Access can be regulated based on facility rules and behavior.

If you are receiving unwanted or threatening jail calls

Do not accept the call if you do not want to pay or communicate.
If there are threats or harassment, contact your local law-enforcement agency.
Ask Spartanburg jail staff about blocking the number if appropriate.
Understand the Sheriff’s warning about blocking. Its current policy says a number blocked by jail staff cannot later be unblocked by the jail.

Medical and Prescription Questions: Do Not Bring Full Medication Bottles

Spartanburg publishes a specific family instruction for medication verification.

General prescription verification

Empty bottles only

The Sheriff’s Medical page says the detention facility does not accept bottles containing medication.

It accepts empty prescription bottles for medication verification and says those bottles will be discarded afterward.

Special medical situations

Call 864-596-2626

The Sheriff specifically directs families to contact the Medical Department for medications associated with cancer, HIV, Hepatitis C treatment or prescribed bronchial inhalers.

Do not leave medication at the jail without following current Medical Department instructions. The Sheriff’s page says medications and bottles left at the facility will be discarded.
After opening Medical read the empty-bottle rule → if the medication involves one of the specialty situations identified by the Sheriff, call 864-596-2626 before traveling → follow the jail practitioner’s current instructions.

Property Release and Court Clothing: Spartanburg Rules Families Commonly Miss

Release inmate property

Signed authorization first

The Sheriff’s Intake Information page says an inmate may release personal property to someone outside the jail, but the inmate must sign the authorization.

The receiver must provide proper identification.

Clothing exchange

Prior approval + 48-hour rule

The visitation policy allows a clothing exchange after prior approval when the clothing is not held as evidence, but says no exchange occurs sooner than 48 hours after entry.

Clothes for a jury trial

The Sheriff says clothing may be brought to the court-holding facility when an inmate is scheduled for a jury trial and the court has advised the jail.

Initial appearances, bond proceedings, motion hearings and pleas are different: the published policy says inmates use jail-issued clothing for those proceedings.
Before bringing property or clothing confirm the inmate’s authorization → ask whether the item is approved → confirm whether the matter is a jury trial → do not show up expecting staff to accept ordinary clothing, books, food, cigarettes, stamps or writing materials.

Need the Police Report Behind the Booking? Start With the Arresting Agency

A jail booking and an incident report are separate records. The agency shown on the arrest/booking information is your first routing clue.

If Spartanburg County Sheriff handled the incident

Sheriff Records — 864-503-4550

8045 Howard Street
Spartanburg, SC 29303

Monday–Thursday: 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

If City of Spartanburg Police handled it

Police Records — 864-596-2035

206 N Forest Street
Spartanburg, SC 29301

City Police currently says report copies are free for people involved in the incident and lists a $3 fee for an incident/accident report requested by someone not involved.

What the Sheriff’s Records Section asks you to have ready

  • Case number, if known.
  • Date of the incident.
  • Name(s) of people involved.
  • Nature/type of the incident.
  • As much additional locating information as you can provide.
After opening the Sheriff Records page verify the office hours → gather the case number/date/names/incident type → call 864-503-4550 or follow the current request process → if the Sheriff did not create the report, return to the booking and identify the correct agency.

If an ordinary report request is not the right route

The Sheriff’s Public Information Office handles Freedom of Information Act requests. Its public page includes a Submit a Freedom of Information Act Request route.

After the Public Information page opens choose the FOIA request option → describe the specific record rather than asking for “everything” → include names, dates, agency/case identifiers and the type of record → understand that lawful exemptions/redactions may apply.

Local Alternative: Who Can Be Considered for Spartanburg Home Detention?

Spartanburg County operates a court-approved home detention/electronic monitoring program. It is not something a family can independently purchase to get someone out of jail.

Possible uses

Sentence or bond condition

The Sheriff’s page says certain non-violent people committed to the jail may be considered after court approval.

A defendant awaiting trial can also be placed on the program when the court makes it a condition of bond.

Not automatic

Court + jail screening

Court approval is only the first stage. Jail/Home Detention staff perform additional eligibility screening before enrollment.

Published Spartanburg screening factors

  • Court approval.
  • Satisfactory background check.
  • Stable permanent residence.
  • Residence in Spartanburg County is preferred.
  • With court permission, another South Carolina county may be possible.
  • Out-of-state defendants are not eligible for this jail program.
  • Structured job with proof of employment and employer approval.
  • Residence telephone or willingness to install the required service.
  • Approval of co-residents.
  • Willingness to absorb program/monitoring costs.
  • Other restrictions can apply.
The Sheriff states that noncompliance can result in the person being taken back into jail custody. In a bond case, the person may be returned before the court for the judge to determine the next action.
After opening Home Detention determine whether there is court approval → review the eligibility factors → do not assume eligibility based only on a non-violent charge → ask the attorney/court about the current application or screening path → use the Sheriff’s linked program documents for detailed conditions.

Spartanburg County Jail vs SCDC: Know When to Switch Search Systems

Use Spartanburg Sheriff when

County detention is the question

  • Recent local arrest.
  • Pre-trial detention.
  • County jail booking photograph.
  • Local bail question.
  • County visit/mail/money question.
Use SCDC when

SCDC states that its search does not cover county detention inmates, people already released from SCDC, parole, probation or other community-supervision records.
After opening SCDC read the search disclaimer → accept/continue into the inmate search → use the person’s exact name or SCDC identifier → compare the photograph and custody information → remember that SCDC’s published dataset is not the live Spartanburg County jail roster.

After the Case: Spartanburg County Expungement Is Separate From Removing an Internet Mugshot

If the case later becomes eligible for expungement, the Seventh Judicial Circuit Solicitor publishes a formal Spartanburg/Cherokee procedure.

Official procedure

Apply before sending fees

The Solicitor’s published procedure says applicants should first submit the application. It says not to bring/send money until the record has been reviewed and the applicant is notified of applicable fees.

Current processing notice

Up to 6 months

The current published Spartanburg procedure says high request volume can make the expungement process take up to six months.

Published fee structure when applicable

$250 Solicitor administrative fee per order under the published procedure.
$25 SLED verification fee where applicable.
$35 Clerk of Court filing fee where applicable.
Exceptions Specific statutory categories can have different fee treatment.
Important limitation: Spartanburg County’s published procedure says the Solicitor’s Office cannot expunge media-related information such as newspaper, television or third-party internet material. A court-record expungement should not be advertised as a guaranteed internet-content deletion.
After opening the Expungement Procedures PDF read the eligibility/process instructions → download the official application → complete the application before sending money → wait for the coordinator’s fee determination → provide proof of disposition if the office cannot locate it → follow the official instructions for the resulting order.

Spartanburg County Jail Inmate Search FAQs

Where is the official Spartanburg County jail inmate search?
Use the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Bookings Search for recent bookings and the Sheriff’s Detention Services Division for current detention information and related jail resources.
How far back does the Spartanburg Sheriff recent booking page show?
The Sheriff’s booking-search page states that it displays people booked within the last 72 hours. For older custody questions, use Detention Services, court records or the appropriate records-request process.
Why might a Spartanburg arrest have no jail mugshot?
A recent arrest may still be processing, the person may already have been released, or an officer may have used a courtesy summons rather than physical jail custody in an applicable situation. A missing photo should not be treated as proof that no case exists.
What is the Spartanburg County Detention Center address and phone?
The Sheriff’s Detention Services Division lists 950 California Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29303 and 864-596-2607. The South Carolina Judicial Branch lists Spartanburg County Bond Court at the same address with 864-596-3424.

Bottom Line: Solve the Spartanburg Question, Not Just the Mugshot Search

Recent arrest? Use the Sheriff’s 72-hour booking search. Still detained? Use Detention Services. Bond question? Use Bail Proceedings and Bond Court. Case status? Use Public Index. Family logistics? Use the exact mail, money, visit, phone or medical page. State prison? Use SCDC.

Before leaving the booking result, save the exact legal name, booking/name number, booking date and time, arresting agency, charges, bail information and any court identifier you can find.

That record trail gives the visitor something a generic inmate-directory page cannot: a direct route from the arrest to the exact Spartanburg office or public system that controls the next question.
