St. Louis Mugshot Search Starts With One Question: City or County?
A search for mugshots St. Louis can fail before you type a name because St. Louis City and St. Louis County are separate jurisdictions. The City runs the City Justice Center downtown; St. Louis County Justice Services operates the County Justice Center in Clayton.
This guide does more than point to a mugshot search. It shows which official system to open, exactly what to do after it opens, how to troubleshoot a fresh arrest, where to post bond, how to visit or add money, how to request an old booking photo or police report, where to follow the court case, and what local reentry or victim assistance may be available.
Do not start with a national mugshot search form
If the arrest happened inside the independent City of St. Louis, use the City’s exact-name inmate locator. If it belongs to St. Louis County, use County Justice Services and its inmate locator.
St. Louis City and St. Louis County Are Not the Same Jail System

How to Search St. Louis City Inmates Step by Step
The City’s locator behaves differently from many jail databases: it requires the person’s exact first and last name. Similar spellings are not automatically returned.
A Recent St. Louis City Arrest Is Missing: What to Check Next
The City’s own inmate-locator page explains several reasons a person may not appear even when you have reliable information that an arrest occurred.
The person may still be held on the Police Department side before transfer into the Division of Corrections system.
The person may still be at a police substation waiting for transportation.
A fast release can occur before a later family search.
The locator requires an exact name. The arrest paperwork may use a different legal spelling than the one you entered.
The arrest may belong to St. Louis County or another municipality instead of the independent City.
For an older case, the person may now be in Missouri DOC or another facility.
How to Search St. Louis County Jail Records Without Using the City Locator
County custody is managed by the St. Louis County Department of Justice Services in Clayton. The County Police jail-information page is a reliable entry point to the current inmate-search process.
Need the Actual St. Louis Mugshot? The Inmate Locator May Not Be the Final Step
A common content gap in mugshot guides is pretending every official inmate result automatically includes a public booking photograph. The City locator itself promises identifying/custody fields such as name, birth year and facility; it does not promise that every search result will provide the photo you want.
If the photograph is not displayed, use the agency records process instead of downloading an unverified image from social media or a scraper.
Request the available arrest record or booking image
Start with the SLMPD Records Service Center or Sunshine Law portal. Availability depends on the record, your relationship to it, whether an investigation is active and Missouri public-record rules.
- Choose the police-report or Sunshine request route.
- Enter the full name.
- Add the approximate arrest/incident date.
- Add the location and report number if known.
- Describe the record narrowly: e.g. “available arrest/booking record and booking photograph associated with this incident.”
- Follow any ID, authorization or fee instructions.
Use Central Police Records / Sunshine
St. Louis County Police says its Central Police Records Unit handles qualifying police reports and Sunshine requests.
- Identify the report or incident.
- Confirm that County Police—not another municipality—handled it.
- Provide the report number when available.
- State your involvement and reason when required.
- If seeking an image, request the specific available arrest/booking photograph.
- Wait for the custodian to determine what can legally be released.

St. Louis County announced a credit-card bond-payment option in 2026. Because eligibility, forms, transaction steps and fees can change, use the current County Bonds page instead of an older “cash-only” jail guide.
- Confirm the inmate is actually in County custody.
- Find the bond associated with the correct case.
- Check whether the current online/card option applies.
- Complete the required bond forms.
- Review current payment or service fees before submitting.
- Save the acceptance confirmation.

City Justice Center Visitation: Approval Happens Before Scheduling
City visitation is not a walk-in process. The proposed visitor must go through the City’s approval process before the inmate can schedule a social visit.
Visitor approval can be affected by these issues
- Active warrants.
- Release from a penal institution within the previous 180 days.
- Probation/parole without required written parole-officer approval.
- Disciplinary-segregation status of the inmate.
- Security or conduct issues at the facility.
What to wear and what not to bring
- Closed-toe shoes.
- Appropriate clothing.
- Dresses at or below the knee under current City guidance.
- Tank tops, hoodies or jackets.
- Large purses or bags that will not fit a small locker.
- Items you intend to give directly to the inmate.

What the City’s 2025 Justice Center Operational Review Adds to This Guide
The City published a 22-page operational review in January 2025 after six weeks of observation and more than 150 interviews, including more than 50 detainees and a similar number of corrections staff.
It is useful because it identifies the practical areas where families and people leaving jail often need more than a booking record. It is not a current inmate handbook, and recommendations in the report should not be described as current guaranteed services.
Begin planning earlier
The report recommended that medical discharge planning begin at admission, including better planning for medication/prescriptions at release.
Resume and interview support
The report recommended partnering with SLATE to provide employment-related preparation such as resume building and interview skills.
Expand access
The review recommended improving educational opportunities, increasing GED participation and strengthening reentry resources.

When Two St. Louis Sources Conflict, Use This Priority
Use for present City or County custody.
Use current Bond, Visit, Accounts, Property, Records or Court pages for the task.
Call the responsible office when official pages conflict or do not load.
Use formal reports for historical context and recommendations, not as a substitute for a newer public instruction.
Use only as secondary context. Never let it override the current government source.

Bottom Line: A Useful St. Louis Mugshot Search Should Solve the Next Problem Too
If a City arrest is too new to appear, use Prisoner Processing. If the booking photo is missing, use the correct police/public-record process. If the goal is release, stop refreshing the mugshot and use the correct bond office. If the goal is the legal outcome, move to Case.net.
That workflow gives the visitor a practical answer even when the mugshot itself is unavailable—and avoids turning this page into a thin gallery or a recycled directory of names and links.
