The PDF Can Also Show Holds
The official report can contain entries such as a hold for another Kansas county, probation-related holds or a Kansas Department of Corrections parole hold.

What the $30 KBI Criminal History Search Actually Returns
A KBI record check is not the same thing as looking at today’s Shawnee County booking report.

County Jail Is Different From Prison
The Department describes detention centers as generally short-term facilities for people awaiting court action, serving certain local sentences or waiting for transfer.
Some Federal or Immigration Detainees May Also Be Housed Locally
Shawnee County says its detention facilities can house people for the U.S. Marshals Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. That does not make the Adult Detention Center a federal prison.

Remote and On-Site Video Visits
Friends and family can use remote visitation or an on-site kiosk. Scheduling is handled through the Smart Communications system.
Special Visits Need Approval
Special visits, including qualifying out-of-state visits, must be pre-approved and arranged with the Adult Detention Center Operations Division Manager or higher.
Bring Valid Photo ID
Visitors should bring valid picture identification and follow all facility rules.
Leave Personal Belongings Outside the Visiting Area
The facility does not allow personal belongings in visitation areas. Lobby lockers are available for items such as phones, purses, coats and cameras.
Do not rely on an old schedule screenshot. Review the live visitation page before travelling because rules and operational availability can change.

Ordinary friends-and-family mail uses Smart Communications. Legal mail and qualifying publications use the Adult Detention Center address.

The Department places certain obligations ahead of commissary purchases, including applicable bonds/court payments, booking fees, program fees, disciplinary charges, medical co-pays, copies and notary services.

Shawnee County says a person who is acquitted, not charged or has all charges dismissed may request reimbursement of a paid booking/processing fee within 30 days using the Booking Fee Reimbursement Form.

For families, health and safety questions can matter much more than the booking photo.
24-Hour Medical Services
Shawnee County says medical services are available at the facility 24 hours a day.
Health Screening Happens at Booking
Every incoming inmate receives an initial health screening during booking.
Daily Medical Requests
The facility has processes for daily medical requests including sick calls, chronic-care clinics and medication needs.
Mental Health Screening
Incoming inmates are also screened for mental-health needs. Behavioral-health professionals assist with acute situations, ongoing medication and counseling needs.
Medical Information Is Confidential
Family members generally cannot obtain private medical information simply by calling. The Department says release of medical information requires an appropriate signed release or other lawful authority.

How an Inmate Can Release Personal Property
The DOC FAQ explains that not all inmate property can simply be handed to a family member on request.
Limited Property Can Be Released During Detention
Examples listed by the Department include financial cards, cell phones, keys and qualifying food-assistance cards, but prior written approval from the facility Operations Division Manager is required.
Other Adult Property Can Be Packaged for a Third Party
An adult inmate can use a prepaid mail envelope or box to mail other personal property or prepare it for an authorized person to collect.
60-Day Pickup Limit After Release
The Department says an authorized person has 60 days after the inmate’s release to pick up packaged property. After that, it can be treated as abandoned and destroyed under Department procedures.

Property pickup related to a transfer requires valid picture identification.
Do Not Bring Items to the Jail Without Approval
The Department requires approval before permissible items can be delivered to an incarcerated person.
