Verify the specific service before driving there. Jail visitation, Sheriff records, District Court records and inmate deposits can use different buildings or counters.

Parking for detention-center visits

Shawnee County’s visitation page says parking is available in the facility’s front parking lot or on the street. Vehicles parked illegally or in unauthorized areas can be ticketed or towed.

The same page says lobby lockers are available for personal property such as purses, cell phones, cameras, pagers, radios and coats because personal belongings are not allowed in visitation areas.

Adult Visitation Changed in 2025: Use Smart Communications, Not an Old Securus Schedule

Shawnee County’s DOC homepage says that beginning January 21, 2025, friends and family began using the video-visitation system supplied by Smart Communications, the department’s newer inmate-communications vendor.

Do not mail cash. Shawnee County states that mailed cash is returned at the inmate’s expense when a valid return address exists. If no valid return address exists, it can go to the general commissary fund instead of the inmate’s personal account.

Why a deposit may not immediately become commissary spending money

Shawnee County says inmate-account withdrawals follow a priority. Before commissary purchases, money may be applied toward items such as:

  • bonds or court-ordered payments;
  • booking and processing fees;
  • Inmate Work Program fees;
  • disciplinary fees;
  • medical co-pays/off-site medical costs;
  • copies and notary services; and

Shawnee County states that a $45 booking and processing fee is assessed to inmates fingerprinted under the cited Kansas law and county resolution.
