Find the County Before the Mugshot

A search for North Carolina mugshots usually starts with a county jail—not one statewide booking gallery. The correct county determines where you find the arrest photo, inmate status, charges and release information.

This guide routes you from county booking records to bond, NC eCourts, SAVAN notifications, state custody, background checks and older-record help without confusing an arrest with a conviction.

Which North Carolina Record Do You Need?

Recent arrest / mugshot Start with the county sheriff or detention booking search.
Still in jail? Use the current inmate or resident inquiry rather than arrest history.
Bond / court date Check the jail record, then the statewide NC court system.
State prison / probation Use NC Department of Adult Correction after county-jail custody no longer fits.

Best search order: county sheriff → NC eCourts → NC DAC or federal locator only when the custody path requires it.

100 counties

North Carolina Mugshot Searches Are County-Based

North Carolina does not operate one complete statewide live county-jail mugshot roster. The North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association provides contact information for all 100 sheriff offices, making it the safest starting point when you only know the county.

Major City to County Lookup

City Search county first Common booking route
Charlotte Mecklenburg Resident / arrest inquiry
Raleigh Wake Sheriff custody + CCBI arrest records
Greensboro Guilford Inmate Search / Recent Arrests
High Point Guilford Guilford detention search
Winston-Salem Forsyth Sheriff inmate inquiry
Durham Durham County detention resources
Fayetteville Cumberland Active Inmate Lookup
Wilmington New Hanover Sheriff / detention facility
Asheville Buncombe Detention / jail dashboards
Jacksonville Onslow Sheriff detention search

Do not search city-only forever: once you know the city, convert it to the county because the sheriff or detention office usually controls the local custody record.

How to Understand North Carolina Booking Fields

Field What it helps answer What it cannot prove
Booking date/time When intake occurred. Conviction or sentencing date.
Arresting agency Which law-enforcement agency handled the arrest. Which office holds every later record.
Charge The allegation associated with intake. The final filed or convicted offense.
Bond The release condition currently shown. That release is guaranteed after one payment.
Booking / inmate ID A strong identity cross-check. The outcome of the case.
Release date Whether release from that facility was recorded. Dismissal or acquittal.
County systems are different

Real North Carolina County Search Examples

Mecklenburg County / Charlotte

Mecklenburg County uses separate resident and arrest resources. The Sheriff’s Arrest Processing Center is the centralized booking entry point for people arrested in Mecklenburg County by participating law-enforcement agencies and operates around the clock.

Mecklenburg also warns users not to confuse criminal charges with convictions. Its site says arrest and resident inquiry information can remain online for three years from arrest or release, which means an older Charlotte mugshot is not proof of present custody.

For deeper local steps, see our Mecklenburg County arrest mugshot and booking guide.

Wake County / Raleigh

Raleigh searches generally require Wake County tools. Current jail custody and the arrest-photo side of the record can be separate searches, so confirm the person in the county system before relying on an arrest image.

Use our Raleigh mugshots and Wake County jail guide for the local custody, arrest-photo and court workflow.

Guilford County / Greensboro and High Point

Guilford County Sheriff’s Office provides separate Inmate Search and Recent Arrests routes and operates detention centers in both Greensboro and High Point. A person can be assigned or transferred between the facilities, so do not reject a correct record because the facility location changed.

Cumberland County / Fayetteville

Cumberland County provides an Active Inmate Lookup and detailed detention guidance. Its official jail information explains why a very recent arrest may not immediately appear: pre-booking can take several hours, followed by intake steps such as medical screening, identification and warrant checks.

For Fayetteville-specific steps, see our Fayetteville NC mugshot and Cumberland County booking guide.

New Hanover County / Wilmington

New Hanover County’s detention division has a staffed booking/intake unit operating 24 hours a day. Wilmington jail questions should therefore be routed to New Hanover County rather than treated as a separate statewide city database.

Buncombe County / Asheville

The Buncombe County Detention Facility is operated by the sheriff in downtown Asheville and can house people for local, state and federal criminal-justice agencies. Buncombe also publishes detention and secured-bond dashboards.

Important missing-photo explanation

Why Someone Can Have a Charge but No Mugshot

A criminal case does not always begin with an arrest.

Process What happens Mugshot implication
Arrest warrant Law enforcement attempts to find and arrest the defendant. A jail booking photo may follow if the person is booked.
Criminal summons The person is served and ordered to appear in court without being arrested on that summons. There may be a court case without a booking photo from that event.

This solves a common mystery: a person can appear in NC court records even when you cannot find a corresponding jail mugshot.

Release conditions

North Carolina Bond Types in Plain English

After arrest, a magistrate or judge can set conditions of pretrial release. Bond is not always the same as paying cash.

Release condition Practical meaning
Written promise The defendant promises to appear without posting money in advance.
Custody release A person or organization agrees in writing to supervise the defendant.
Unsecured bond Money is promised but generally is not paid upfront for release.
Secured bond Money or other approved security must be provided before release.

Bond can be reviewed at later court hearings, so an amount shown on an early booking page may not remain the final release condition.

Before paying: verify every charge, every hold, the current bond status and the approved payment route with the responsible jail or court.

Statewide court follow-up

Use NC eCourts After You Confirm the Booking

North Carolina completed eCourts implementation in all 100 counties in October 2025. Public Portal users can search available court records, hearings and case information online.

Save These Details Before Leaving the Jail Search

  • Full legal name
  • County
  • Booking date
  • Booking / inmate number
  • Case number when shown
  • Charge description
  • Arresting agency
  • Release or custody status

Useful Portal Search Methods

Smart Search Use a party name or case number to locate the case summary and case timeline.
Search Hearings Use the party, case number or other available filters to check hearing locations and times.
Advanced filters Narrow by location, case type, filing date, case status or party information when a common name returns too many results.

Find the Next Court Date

If the immediate question is simply “when is court?”, use the Judicial Branch court-date search instead of digging through an old mugshot page.

County jail vs state custody

When to Switch From County Jail to NC DAC

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search is not the right first tool for a fresh county arrest.

NC DAC offender information covers state prisoners and people under probation or parole supervision. DAC specifically states that its offender-search information does not include county-jail records.

Situation Search first
Arrest happened today County sheriff / jail
Awaiting local court County jail + NC eCourts
Sentenced to NC state prison NC DAC
On NC probation or parole NC DAC
Federal custody suspected Federal Bureau of Prisons
Custody notifications

Use NC SAVAN for Release and Transfer Alerts

NC SAVAN provides offender custody information and automated notifications and connects with North Carolina county jails and Adult Correction systems.

What SAVAN Can Help With

  • Check qualifying offender custody status
  • Register for custody-change notifications
  • Receive release or transfer alerts
  • Use phone or online registration routes
  • Access multilingual assistance
  • Get victim-assistance resource information

Important SAVAN Limitations

Police precinct only SAVAN does not monitor people merely being held at a police precinct or similar local police facility.
Bonded out before jail booking A person who bonds out at the magistrate level and is never booked into jail may not be tracked.
Juvenile / mental facility SAVAN does not track people housed in juvenile or mental-health facilities.
Transferred to another jail A transfer notification may require you to re-register for continuing notifications.

SAVAN is not a mugshot archive: use it for custody and notification needs, then use court records for the legal case.

When the image is missing

Request an Arrest Report or Booking Photo

The jail, arresting police agency and court clerk may each hold different records.

1

Identify the arresting agency

Determine whether city police, county sheriff, Highway Patrol or another agency handled the incident.

2

Save identifying information

Record the full name, arrest date, county, booking number and case number when available.

3

Ask for one specific record

Request the arrest report, incident report or publicly releasable booking photograph instead of asking for every record about a person.

4

Confirm fees and redactions first

Ask whether the agency holds the record, whether any material is restricted and whether an electronic copy is available.

Copyable request wording

“I am requesting the publicly releasable arrest report and/or booking photograph for [full name], believed to have been arrested or booked on or about [date] in [county], North Carolina. Please advise whether your agency holds the requested record and whether fees or redactions apply.”

No guaranteed photograph: a booking or court record can exist even when a public-facing mugshot is unavailable.

Different record purpose

Mugshot Search vs Criminal Background Check

A mugshot page is not a reliable substitute for an official criminal-record search.

What you need Official route Current key detail
Certified single-county court search Clerk of Superior Court $25 name-based certified search
Non-certified statewide court search Public courthouse terminal Search itself is available without charge; printing may cost extra
Your own fingerprint-based NC record NC State Bureau of Investigation Right to Review $14 NC-only personal review
Online case lookup NC Judicial Branch Portal Useful for case information, but courts say individuals doing background checks should use the clerk route instead

Screening caution: do not use this informational mugshot article as a substitute for a legally appropriate employment, housing, credit, insurance or other eligibility-screening process.

Old or removed cases

North Carolina Expunction and Private Mugshot Sites

An expunction is a legal process that can remove qualifying criminal charges or convictions from a person’s record and seal or destroy applicable state records.

North Carolina has several different expunction laws, so eligibility depends on the charge, conviction, outcome and individual circumstances. The Judicial Branch says filing generally carries a $175 fee, although some types of expunction do not require that fee.

Private websites are different: an expunction does not automatically remove the same arrest information from every privately operated mugshot or record website. Those private sources generally must be contacted separately.

Why a North Carolina Mugshot May Be Missing

Booking is still processing A new arrest can occur before the county completes intake, fingerprints, medical screening and public-data entry.
Criminal summons instead of arrest A court case can exist without a jail booking from that event.
Wrong county Convert the city or arrest location to the correct county and try that sheriff.
Name entered differently Try aliases, former names, suffix-free spelling and hyphen variations.
Already released Some searches prioritize active inmates rather than maintaining an unlimited arrest archive.
State correctional custody Switch to NC DAC when the person has entered state prison, probation or parole supervision.
Federal custody Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons when federal custody is supported by the case history.
Expunction or restricted record Some adult and juvenile records may be sealed, expunged, confidential or otherwise unavailable to the public.
Wrong-person prevention

Verify the Person Before You Trust the Record

  • Correct North Carolina county
  • Full legal name
  • Age or date of birth
  • Booking date
  • Arresting agency
  • Booking or inmate number
  • Charge description
  • Current custody or release status
  • NC court case when outcome matters
  • Official source rather than only a repost

Name and photo alone are not enough: common names, reused arrest images and old booking pages can produce serious wrong-person errors.

Final verification

Before You Rely on a North Carolina Mugshot

  • I identified the correct county.
  • I checked the official county sheriff or detention source.
  • I matched several identity fields.
  • I separated current custody from arrest history.
  • I checked the bond type rather than assuming cash was required.
  • I used NC eCourts for the legal case.
  • I used NC DAC only for state custody or supervision.
  • I used SAVAN when custody notifications mattered.
  • I did not treat an arrest as proof of guilt.
  • I recorded the official source and date checked.

North Carolina Mugshot and Arrest FAQs

Is there one statewide North Carolina mugshot search?

No single state database provides a complete live roster of every North Carolina county jail. Start with the sheriff or detention system in the county where the arrest occurred. NC Department of Adult Correction offender search covers state prison, probation and parole records rather than county jail information.

How do I find someone arrested today in North Carolina?

Identify the county, open its official sheriff or detention inmate search, search the legal name and compare booking date, age and arresting agency. Same-day bookings may take time to finish processing before becoming visible.

Why can someone have a North Carolina criminal charge but no mugshot?

Not every criminal charge requires an arrest. North Carolina courts explain that a criminal summons can order a defendant to appear in court without an arrest, while a warrant can result in arrest. A person also may bond out before being fully tracked by some custody-notification systems.

What is the difference between county jail search and NC DAC offender search?

County sheriff and detention systems are the starting point for fresh local bookings and current county-jail custody. NC DAC offender searches cover people in state prison and people under state probation or parole supervision.

How do I check bond after a North Carolina arrest?

Check the county jail record and court information. North Carolina release conditions can include written promise, custody release, unsecured bond or secured bond. Bond can also be reviewed at later court hearings.

How do I search a North Carolina court case after an arrest?

Use North Carolina Judicial Branch Portal, which is available statewide after eCourts implementation in all 100 counties. Search by party name or case number and use the court-date and hearing tools when necessary.

How do I get an official North Carolina criminal background check?

A Clerk of Superior Court can provide a certified name-based criminal record search for one county for the current listed fee. Courthouse public terminals provide non-certified searches, while the SBI offers a fingerprint-based Right to Review of your own North Carolina criminal history.

Can NC SAVAN notify me when an inmate is released?

NC SAVAN provides custody information and notifications for participating county-jail and state-custody records. It does not track people held only at police precincts, people who bond out before jail booking, or people housed in juvenile or mental facilities.

How can I request a North Carolina booking photo that is not online?

Identify the sheriff, detention facility or arresting agency that created or holds the record and send a narrow request containing the person’s full name, approximate arrest date, county and specific record requested. Availability and redactions can vary.

What happens to private mugshot websites after a North Carolina expunction?

North Carolina courts explain that an expunction does not automatically remove arrest or criminal information from every private website. Private sources generally must be contacted separately after an expunction.
