Search Arrest, Mugshot & Inmate Records by Name
Search by name and state for arrest, booking, mugshot, inmate, jail roster, prison, criminal and court-record search categories.
Independent records-search resource. This website is not a government agency, police department, sheriff's office, jail, prison or courthouse. Search coverage varies by source and jurisdiction. Some links may lead to third-party services, and compensation may be received when a partner service is used.
Find the Right New York Inmate, Mugshot, Jail, Court or Release Record
A New York inmate or mugshot search fails when you start in the wrong database. New York separates state prison custody, county jails outside NYC, New York City DOC custody, court records, parole supervision, personal criminal-history review and federal custody.
Use this page as a practical router. It tells you which official website to open, what to click after it opens, which identifiers to copy, why mugshots may be missing, when to move from jail records to court records, and how to register for custody alerts instead of refreshing old booking-photo pages.
Pick the official system that matches the person’s current situation
Instead of searching a recycled mugshot database first, answer one question: is this person likely in state prison, NYC custody, an outside-NYC county jail, parole supervision, court-only status, or federal custody?

Choose Your Exact Search Intent
Use This System Picker Before Opening Any Website
| User question | Open this first | What to do after it opens |
|---|---|---|
| Is the person in New York State prison? | DOCCS Incarcerated Lookup | Search DIN first. If unknown, use exact last name + birth year or partial last name. |
| Was the person just arrested outside NYC? | Commission of Correction locator page | Choose county jail route, then select/search the correct local jail system. |
| Is the person in NYC DOC / Rikers custody? | NYC DOC Person in Custody Lookup | Search the person, verify facility/location and use court lookup for next appearance. |
| Was the person released but the case continues? | WebCrims or CHRS | Search defendant/case information and confirm next court date or disposition. |
| Do you need release/transfer notification? | VINELink New York | Search the person and register a phone, text or email notification method. |
| Do you need your own official NY criminal-history record? | DCJS Personal Record Review | Choose suppressed/unsuppressed, use the correct service code and complete fingerprinting. |
| Is this a federal case or federal prison? | Federal BOP Inmate Locator | Search by BOP number or name and compare age/location/release fields. |
DOCCS State Prison Lookup: Exact Micro-Steps
Use this only when the person is in, or was previously in, New York State prison custody. DOCCS is not the normal first place for a same-day county arrest or NYC DOC custody search.
If You Only Know the Name: Use DOCCS Name Search Correctly
Name-only New York inmate searches create wrong-person matches. Use this approach to reduce mistakes.
Use when spelling is certain
- Use exact last-name spelling.
- Add birth year or approximate age only when confident.
- Review every returned person before assuming a match.
- Copy the DIN after you identify the right person.
Use when spelling is uncertain
- Remove birth year if exact search fails.
- Enter the beginning of the last name you are sure about.
- Try spelling variants, hyphens, spaces and suffix differences.
- Use facility, age and release/custody details to verify.
County Jail Search Outside New York City
For county arrests outside NYC, do not use DOCCS first unless the person has already entered state prison. Use the Commission of Correction locator route or the individual county jail.
NYC DOC Person in Custody Lookup: What to Click and What It Means
Use NYC DOC for people held in New York City Department of Correction custody. This covers the five boroughs: Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens and Richmond counties.
Person in Custody Lookup
NYC DOC says the tool finds the current location of a person in DOC custody and basic case information.
Police, state or federal custody
NYC DOC clearly says its lookup is not for people in police custody, state custody or federal custody.
Why a New York Official Record May Not Show a Mugshot
A missing photo does not automatically mean there was no arrest, no custody record or no case. Official systems have different purposes.
| What you see | Possible reason | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Custody result but no image | The official system may not publish booking photos. | Verify with identifiers, not photo alone. |
| Third-party mugshot but no official result | The photo may be old, copied, miscaptioned or from another jurisdiction. | Search the official custody and court source before trusting it. |
| No DOCCS result | The person may be in county jail, NYC custody, parole-only status, sealed/YO status or federal custody. | Use the system picker above. |
| Old prison result | Former DOCCS custody can remain searchable unless legally removed. | Check release/status fields and court records. |
| Name-only match | Common names create false matches. | Compare DIN, age, facility, county, case and release details. |
New York Inmate Lookup Field Decoder
| Field | Why it matters | How users misuse it |
|---|---|---|
| DIN | Most direct DOCCS state-prison identifier. | Treating name search as equally reliable after DIN is known. |
| NYSID | State ID used by criminal justice agencies; useful if already known. | Expecting DOCCS to publicly display NYSID. |
| Facility | Tells you where to check visitation, mail, phone and money rules. | Assuming the facility cannot change. |
| Custody status | Shows whether the person appears currently confined or released. | Assuming release means the court case ended. |
| Release date/type | Helps explain prior custody and parole/community supervision routing. | Using old release fields as current custody proof. |
| Book / booking number | Useful for local jail or NYC DOC custody events. | Using it as a DOCCS DIN. |
| Docket / case number | Bridge to WebCrims, CHRS or clerk search. | Assuming jail data is final court data. |
| Charge | Shows allegation/offense wording attached to the custody or case record. | Treating a charge as proof of conviction. |
No Result Found? Use This Troubleshooting Order
If the person is in NYC custody, DOCCS will not be the right first tool. If the person is in state prison, a county jail page may not find them.
A very recent arrest may still be in police or jail intake. Recheck after processing or call the local agency when urgent.
Try partial last name, legal surname, suffix removal, hyphen variation, maiden/alias spelling or exact last name + birth year.
A released local inmate may disappear from jail lookup while the court case remains active. Move to WebCrims, CHRS or the court clerk.
DOCCS excludes youthful-offender records and deletes/restricts certain legally removed records. No public result may be correct.
If the person is released to community supervision, use DOCCS Parolee Lookup instead of jail search.
Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator if the person is in federal custody.
A third-party photo can remain online after official records change. Verify with current official sources.
When You Need the Court Case, Stop Refreshing the Mugshot Page
A custody lookup does not always show the next court date, final disposition, sealing status, indictment path, dismissal or sentencing details.

Bail, Release and “Is This Person Out?” Practical Steps
A mugshot page rarely answers bail and release correctly by itself. Use custody plus court records together.
Visit, Call, Send Money or Message: Use the Facility Type First
After you identify the custody system, switch from “mugshot search” to the family-action page for that system.
| Custody type | Open this official area | Micro-guide after opening |
|---|---|---|
| DOCCS state prison | DOCCS Visitors / Family Handbook / facility page | Confirm facility → visitor rules → current visit update → package/mail rules → phone/tablet/money route. |
| County jail outside NYC | County jail website or sheriff page | Find the jail → check visitation schedule → phone/vendor rules → mail format → commissary/payment route. |
| NYC DOC | NYC DOC family visit / services pages | Verify DOC custody → facility → visit instructions → account/messaging/mail rules → court follow-up. |
| Federal BOP | BOP facility and inmate locator pages | Confirm BOP location → open facility page → read visiting, money, mail and phone rules. |
State prison calls changed in 2025
DOCCS announced that phone calls made through tablets or facility phones would be free of charge effective August 1, 2025. Confirm call-list and facility rules on DOCCS pages.
Vendor/account rules apply
DOCCS family materials describe secure messaging and tablet-related services through approved systems. Start from the official DOCCS family guidance, not an old fee copy.
Facility rules can change
Visiting schedules, ID rules, dress codes, visitor approval and facility restrictions must be checked for the exact facility.

Mail and Packages: Do Not Use One Statewide Rule for Everyone
State prison package rules
DOCCS package and allowable-item rules can depend on facility, status and Directive #4911. Confirm vendor, item, weight, frequency and address format before sending anything.
Local rules control
County jails may use mail scanning, postcard-only rules, vendor-only photos, publication limits, or strict return-address requirements.
City rules are separate
NYC DOC mail and package rules are not the same as DOCCS prison rules or upstate county jail rules.
New York VINE Release Alerts: When Refreshing the Page Is the Wrong Tool
If your real goal is “tell me when this person is released or moved,” use VINE instead of repeatedly searching a mugshot page.
Need Your Own Official New York Rap Sheet? Use DCJS Record Review
Public inmate and mugshot pages are not the same as your official New York criminal-history record. DCJS Personal Record Review is the correct route when you need your own fingerprint-based record.
Service code 15464Z
Use when you need the suppressed-record response described by DCJS.
Service code 15465F
Use when you need the unsuppressed response described by DCJS.
FOIL or Records Request: Send It to the Right Custodian
The custodian depends on the record type. A jail does not necessarily own the police report, and a court record is not the same as a DCJS fingerprint history.
| Record needed | Likely custodian | What to include in request |
|---|---|---|
| State prison custody details | DOCCS | Name, DIN, facility, date range and specific record requested. |
| County jail booking | County jail / sheriff | Name, booking date, county, jail, booking number if known. |
| NYC DOC custody | NYC DOC | Name, DOB, Book & Case number/NYSID if known, facility and date range. |
| Police report | Arresting police agency | Incident date, location, report number, arresting agency and person name. |
| Court disposition | Court clerk / OCA tools | County, court, docket/case number, defendant name and date range. |
| Own criminal history | DCJS | Use DCJS fingerprint-based Personal Record Review, not FOIL for another person. |
Safety, PREA and Complaint Routes
If the issue is safety, abuse, misconduct or a facility complaint, do not use a mugshot search as the action path. Use official reporting channels.
Office of Special Investigations
Use DOCCS OSI complaint routes for misconduct-related concerns involving DOCCS custody or supervision.
State custody safety reporting
Use DOCCS PREA information for sexual abuse or sexual harassment reporting and policy information.
Commission of Correction
For county jail concerns, the New York State Commission of Correction provides complaint routes.
Federal Custody in New York: Use BOP, Not State Tools
If the person is in federal custody, New York DOCCS, county jails and NYC DOC are not the controlling official source.
Practical New York Search Tips Most Generic Pages Miss
It prevents repeated name confusion
Once you find a DOCCS result, copy the DIN. It is more useful than a screenshot of the name result.
Rikers searches start with NYC DOC
Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island custody should be checked through NYC DOC first.
County jail first outside NYC
A same-week arrest outside NYC usually belongs to the local jail/county route before DOCCS.
Use WebCrims / CHRS
If custody is unclear but you know a case exists, search court tools instead of photo pages.
It may be a legal limit
Youthful offender, sealed, reversed and Correction Law §9 removals can make public web results incomplete by design.
Beware fake cleanup offers
Verify official custody/court status before paying any site that promises instant mugshot removal.
